Ross McCormack reveals shock reason why he’s ‘happy’ Russell Martin was sacked by Rangers
Rangers face yet another massive decision as they search for their next permanent manager.
Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers are searching for a new Rangers head coach, with fans delighted to finally see the back of Russell Martin.
Steven Gerrard has been heavily linked with the Rangers job, which would see the former Aston Villa head coach return to Ibrox.
Cavenagh and Co. have come under fire for their recent decisions, as Ross McCormack reveals a shock reason as to why he’s happy that Martin got the boot.

Ross McCormack says it would have got ‘physical’ with Russell Martin
Martin was never seen as a preferred choice by Rangers fans when he got the job, but he didn’t help himself with the public drama involving Nico Raskin amid other issues.
In his final game at Falkirk, Martin was escorted away from Rangers fans by police, showcasing just how bad the relationship had got.
McCormack has had his say on Rangers’ decision to sack him, while speaking on Open Goal, and is glad to see the former Premier League manager go.
- Russell Martin signed a three-year deal at Rangers
- He was appointed on 5 June
- Martin was sacked on 5 October
“You talk about the police escort for Russell Martin, during the week, fans were in hotels approaching people like you’re Thelwell’s [Kevin] and people like that,” he said.
“I don’t like managers losing their jobs, but I’m actually glad he has, because I think something bad would’ve happened to him. It would have got physical.”
There’s no doubt that things got bad, but Martin was stubborn and stayed in the job despite fans clearly stating they wanted him gone.
It ended much worse than it had to for Martin, as it seemed like it got to a point where it was just about damage limitation.
Martin should have left Rangers after fan protests
Before the Premier Sports Cup Quarter‑final versus Hibernian at Ibrox, Gers fans gathered outside the stadium in a protest against Martin and chief executive Patrick Stewart.
It was at this moment that Martin should have realised there was no way back for him, and that he needed to walk.
Rangers fans have had their wishes granted and can look forward to a fresh appointment and a new chapter.
Gerrard could be back, but Derek McInnes is also a strong favourite for the Rangers job.
