What Derek McInnes has previously said about the Rangers job as Hearts’ stance emerges
Derek McInnes is being linked with the Rangers job once again in the aftermath of Russell Martin’s dismissal.
Martin’s tenure was the shortest of any permanent Rangers manager, and his reign was mercifully brought to a close following Sunday’s frustrating 1-1 draw at Falkirk.
The former Southampton boss has been vilified by supporters of late, and the mood could hardly be worse in Govan after a dismal start to the campaign.
The likes of Steven Gerrard and Danny Rohl are among the early candidates to step into his shoes, while McInnes is another potential option.

Hearts are ‘relaxed’ about Derek McInnes’ position
McInnes is no stranger to links with the Rangers job, as he was among the names who were touted to take the reins before Martin was appointed earlier in the summer.
The Gers opted against appointing the 54-year-old on that occasion, and he has already begun to build an exciting project at Hearts so far this campaign.
- Hearts are top of the Premiership table and have notched six wins from seven games
- They have kept clean sheets in three successive league outings
- Sir Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen side were the last time to take the title away from the Old Firm way back in 1985
The Tynecastle outfit are sat top of the Premiership table after the opening seven games and still have their unbeaten record intact, having failed to win only one of those games.
It has now emerged that, as expected, Hearts are planning to “resist” any attempts from Rangers to poach McInnes, according to the Edinburgh Evening News.
The Jambos are said to be “relaxed” about their boss’ position at the moment, with no approach having been received from Ibrox as of yet.

However, given what McInnes has said previously about the Rangers job, that could change in the future.
He was also linked with Rangers while at Aberdeen in 2017, and although he played down suggestions of a move, he did acknowledge that “Rangers are a strong club and will always attract people,” as per The Press and Journal.
Rangers would find it difficult to tempt Derek McInnes
It isn’t surprising at all to see that McInnes is on Rangers’ radar once again as they go in search of another new boss.
However, the exact reason for their interest is also likely to be the exact reason that will prevent them from landing him.
The former Kilmarnock chief has made an excellent start to his Hearts tenure, and has the entire club riding on the crest of a wave at the moment.
There is a genuine feeling that they could achieve something special this season, and it would be a huge surprise to see him trade that for what is a mammoth job at Ibrox, despite the seismic pull that Rangers have.
The Gers faithful will be hoping that his previous comments are proven to be true and he is tempted to take the job, but it seems far more likely that they will miss out on him once again.
