Sir Alex Ferguson would supply reference for manager now linked with Rangers job after Russell Martin sack
Rumours over the next Rangers manager have now started circulating.
The Rangers board have been slammed for their handling of the situation with Russell Martin, as the search has started for a replacement.
Some names have already been linked, as Steven Gerrard is rumoured to return to Ibrox, four years on from his first successful stint at the club.
Free agent Mark van Bommel has put himself forward for the Rangers job, as the 49ers ideally need to make an appointment during the international break.
However, the latest man linked with the job may have the best chance out of all the candidates due to Sir Alex Ferguson‘s golden endorsement opportunity.

Derek McInnes’ chances for Rangers job boosted by Sir Alex Ferguson reference
Current Hearts manager Derek McInnes has been lauded for his work in the past, winning trophies with Aberdeen and Kilmarnock.
According The Irish News, McInnes is now in contention for the Rangers job, as everything is lining up for the Scot to be the perfect replacement for Martin.
- Hearts have 10 out of their 12 games this season under McInnes
- They beat Rangers 2-0 at Ibrox in September
- McInnes joined Hearts this year after his successful time at Kilmarnock
Boyhood Rangers fan in Ferguson, tips McInnes as a top manager, and would happily provide him a glowing reference for the Rangers job.
“Derek is a top-class, experienced manager who still has the energy of youth. He is capable of taking on a big job. If I was asked for a reference for him, I would gladly supply it,” as quoted by Sky Sports.
Hearts is McIness’ biggest job yet, and with his side two points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership, it’s becoming increasingly obvious that he is ready for the next step up in management.

That being said, what can McInnes bring to Rangers, and how would he be an improvement on Martin?
Derek McInnes is the best option for the Rangers job
Though Gerrard will always be loved at Ibrox, but since his time in Glasgow, he has failed to impress in both the Premier League and Saudi Arabia.
McInnes, on the other hand, has shown consistency for years, especially with Aberdeen, where in his eight years at the club, he never finished below fourth place in his full seasons.
In 2023‑24, McInnes won Scottish Premiership Manager of the Season for leading Kilmarnock to a fourth-place finish and European qualification.
McInnes’s sides always have characteristics of competitiveness and physicality, two elements desperately needed at Rangers right now, as his use of wing play would benefit the likes of Djeidi Gassama and Oliver Antman.
