Rob Edwards emerges as fresh Rangers candidate as fans to fume at Ibrox

Rangers could potentially be turning to the Championship to appoint Rob Edwards as a successor to Russell Martin.

The former Southampton boss arrived at the Gers in the summer and lasted just 123 days, the shortest tenure of any permanent manager in G51.

Martin’s sacking felt a matter of time after dropping points against Falkirk on 5 October, with the Light Blues sitting eighth in the William Hill Premiership with a negative goal difference.

Andrew Cavenagh has a massive task on his hands at Ibrox, as the next person to take over can’t fail after the Scottish manager’s miserable spell at the Glaswegian outfit.

Edwards is a possible candidate to replace Martin after a poor start to the season at the Gers, according to the Scottish Daily Express.

The news outlet reports on 7 October that the Middlesbrough boss may be being eyed at Ibrox after his impressive spell in the EFL Championship this season.

Boro are second in the league, sitting on 18 points after losing just one of their opening nine matches.

Edwards previously led Luton Town to the Premier League, but was unable to sustain his success with the Hatters.

The Ibrox faithful aren’t with Kevin Thelwell right now, and undoubtedly wouldn’t want him anywhere near the appointment of a new head coach at the Light Blues.

However, with the Glaswegian outfit’s sporting director having previously worked with the Middlesbrough boss at Wolves, where the 42-year-old served as a coach between 2013 and 2017, his arrival in G51 is likely to be met with disapproval from the fans.

Andrew Cavenagh must sack Kevin Thelwell

Andrew Cavenagh should assess Thelwell’s position, as Martin can’t be blamed for everything that has gone wrong at the Gers.

The sporting director’s recruitment record at Rangers has been underwhelming, with Djeidi Gassama being the only summer arrival who has lived up to expectations so far.

Robbie Thelwell has also been appointed as the Light Blues’ new head of recruitment, which has also raised red flags among supporters.

Those responsible for appointing the former Southampton boss should also be relieved of their duties, as the American owners need to take the reins at the Glaswegian outfit.
