Michael Stewart to be shocked as Derek McInnes happy to have Rangers talks

Rangers may be regretting appointing Russell Martin over Hearts manager Derek McInnes in the summer.

The former Southampton boss had a miserable spell at the Gers, winning just five of his 17 games in charge and breaking several unwanted records.

Martin’s tenure is the shortest ever of any permanent manager at Ibrox, with the Scotsman lasting just 123 days in G51.

McInnes was linked with succeeding Barry Ferguson, but the Glaswegian outfit, in hindsight, made the wrong call under the American ownership.

Derek McInnes to strengthen position at Hearts if Rangers talks held

Michael Stewart would be “flabbergasted” to see McInnes leave Hearts for the Gers right now, considering what’s being built at the Edinburgh outfit.

The former midfielder has suggested it wouldn’t be surprising to see Tony Bloom give the 54-year-old head coach what he wants if the Light Blues come knocking for him.

While a move to Ibrox seems unrealistic at this stage, Stewart believes McInnes would be happy about the conversations, as it would only benefit his stature at Tynecastle.

Speaking on the Scottish Football Social Club on 6 October, the former Scotland international said: “I would be absolutely and utterly flabbergasted if McInnes was to be the Rangers manager. You need to recognise and understand what’s going on at Hearts. Derek’s building something there. They have some serious backup.

“Can you just imagine if Rangers were in the ballpark to talk it, it wouldn’t be beyond the realms of possibility Bloom just turns and goes, ‘Derek, what do you want? We’re not letting you go. What do you want?'”

Stewart added: “I’m sure Derek would be quite happy to have this conversation to be going on because it strengthens his position even more.”

Andrew Cavenagh to regret Russell Martin appointment

Cavenagh will undoubtedly regret appointing Martin, with the Scotsman arguably the worst manager in the Gers’ history, with a win percentage of just around 29.

Rangers saw what McInnes can do as Hearts ended their 11-year wait for a win at Ibrox, taking three points with a 2-0 victory on 13 September, as Lawrence Shankland scored a brace and showed the Light Blues what they were missing.

McInnes’ record at Hearts this season

With the Jambos top of the William Hill Premiership after seven matches, there certainly is no reason for the ex-Kilmarnock boss to bail ship as Celtic also go through their own struggles.

The US consortium now have to take the utmost care in who they will hand the reins to next, as another flop manager will surely lead to questions around their leadership just a few months after their takeover in G51.
