Steven Gerrard rival emerges for Rangers job as new manager update drops after Russell Martin sack

Rangers have accelerated their quest to find another new manager already now that Russell Martin has been relieved of his duties.

Rangers have sacked Martin just four months after the former Scotland defender was appointed on a three-year contract.

His departure was a long time coming. Rangers’ 1-1 draw to Falkirk in the Scottish Premiership was just the latest of a long line of disappointing results, which have left the Ibrox club eighth.

Martin had also lost the backing of Rangers fans, having to be escorted to his car by police following the draw on 5 October at the Falkirk Stadium.

But with the bandage ripped completely off, it is without a doubt going to be a hectic month at Ibrox, with Steven Gerrard already linked with a return.

Danny Rohl to rival Steven Gerrard for Rangers job

Rangers fans have urged for Gerrard to return as manager four seasons after his departure.

However, the Liverpool legend is not the only candidate under close inspection by the Gers.

Gerarrd, along with Danny Rohl, are both appreciated by senior figures at Ibrox and were on the shortlist before Martin took charge, according to Ben Jacobs via X on 5 October.

Rohl’s most prominent managerial role was at Sheffield Wednesday, where he was appointed head coach in October 2023, securing Championship survival on the final day of the season.

However, the German coach departed the Owls towards the end of July 2025, by mutual agreement. As a result, the 36-year-old could be more than open to starting a new chapter at Ibrox.

Danny Rohl could be the better option

On the surface, a reunion with Gerrard seems like the best option for all involved.

Gerrard and Rangers appear to be a match made in heaven, and it is understandable why some fans are desperate for his return.

However, there is a long-standing saying that some things are better left untouched, and this seems to be a prime example.

Second tenures for managers are a flip of a coin, a roll of the dice in most cases, and it is difficult to see why things would be different in Gerrard’s case.

Meanwhile, Rohl is a young, upcoming manager with new ideas looking to make his coaching mark in football. As such, something new could be just what the Gers need as it stands.

The 49ers and Andrew Cavenagh may be wary of pushing that narrative again so soon after Martin, though.
