Sky Sports share update on next Rangers manager search from Ibrox
Rangers have a little under two weeks to find a new manager ahead of their return to Scottish Premiership action.
Russell Martin was sacked by Rangers on Sunday, hours after a 1-1 draw with Falkirk that extended the Gers’ terrible run to start the season.
Steven Gerrard is an early frontrunner for the Rangers job, while names such as Sean Dyche, Mark van Bommel, Kevin Muscat and Danny Rohl have also been mentioned.
Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe know there is no room for error with this next Rangers appointment given just how badly Martin’s tenure panned out.

The good news for Cavenagh and Marathe is that they now have a clear schedule to mull over the candidates to succeed Martin.
While many will argue Martin should have been given the boot long before this weekend, it has now been done and there is a bit of a gap before the Dundee United game on 18 October.
Indeed, Simon Jordan slammed the Rangers board as “weak” over the delay in sacking Martin, and there is a sense that this season has already got away from the Gers.
Whether it is Gerrard, Van Bommel or any of the other aforementioned names, the appointment needs to be spot on and it needs to be made fairly swiftly.
Asked for an update on the names mentioned who could replace Martin live on Sky Sports News on Monday lunchtime from outside Ibrox, reporter Luke Shanley said: “So far, Steven Gerrard, given he won Rangers’ only title in the past 14 years.
“There are also other names such as Sean Dyche, who is known to Kevin Thelwell from Everton. Rangers know they have to get it right this time.
“But you don’t get long in Glasgow as Martin has just shown. You have to win and you have to show signs of improvement, and that you can compete.”

Gerrard previously managed Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title, which means he has been there, done it and got the t-shirt.
However, the manner of his exit did not go down well among Rangers fans and many would not be fully supportive of his return.
If not Steven Gerrard, then who for Rangers job?
There is an argument to be had that Dyche would be well suited to the Rangers job, given he will come in and work to a system that gets the best out of his players.
Time in charge | 3 years, 163 days |
Games managed | 193 |
Games won | 125 |
Win rate | 64% |
However, in the long-term, it is not the right fit. Thelwell needs to look beyond his previous connections and cast the net wider.
The Ibrox job is one that many high-profile managers would love. Indeed, Jose Mourinho was recently linked with Rangers, and while that is no longer possible, it shows the calibre of names in the frame.
Fans want an appointment made soon, but if it means taking slightly longer to ensure every possible candidate is looked into, then so be it.
