Ferguson reacts instantly to major Steven Gerrard return news at Rangers

Rangers finally parted company with Russell Martin on Sunday and the search for a new manager is fully underway.

Martin was sacked by Rangers hours after the pathetic 1-1 draw at Falkirk, which leaves the Gers on eight points from seven Scottish Premiership matches.

Sean Dyche is one of a number of names linked with the Rangers job, along with the likes of Steven Gerrard, Danny Rohl, Kevin Muscat and Mark van Bommel.

Rangers will now hope a new manager is in place in time for the Dundee United clash at Ibrox on 18 October.

Of those aforementioned names, Gerrard is the current frontrunner to succeed Martin as Rangers’ next manager.

In major news reported by The Guardian, it is said Gerrard is the name under serious consideration among the Rangers board right now.

And in the view of Derek Ferguson, the brother of Barry Ferguson, Gerrard’s return could make sense based on a previous precedent.

“Martin was never a good fit, to be honest,” Ferguson exclusively told Ibrox News. “I hope him and his family are well.

Managing Rangers takes a certain type of character and Martin was always up against it concerning the fans.

“As for Gerrard, Walter Smith’s second stint at Rangers was successful and there’s no reason why Gerrard can’t do the same.”

Steven Gerrard’s record as Rangers manager

Gerrard won the Scottish Premiership title with Rangers in 2020-21, which is the Glasgow club’s only title success since 2011.

The manner of the Englishman’s exit means he is not exactly universally loved, while he subsequently failed in stints with Aston Villa and then Saudi side Al-Ettifaq.

Gerrard’s win rate of 64 per cent as Rangers boss was hugely respectable, though, and he has proven he is capable of wrestling the title back from Celtic.

Other names will also be considered beyond Gerrard for the Rangers job, but it is certainly looking as though it is the 45-year-old’s job to lose at this stage.
