Ally McCoist offers blunt verdict on Russell Martin Rangers sacking

Andrew Cavenagh finally decided to pull the trigger on Russell Martin.

Cavenagh gave every last opportunity for the head coach to turn things around, despite Martin’s strained relationship with Rangers fans,

Rangers drew 1-1 with Falkirk on Sunday, which would later be the final straw for Martin, as just hours later, the club released a statement announcing his departure.

With the club in eighth place, rescuing anything from this Scottish Premiership season will be a huge challenge for whoever takes over, as Rangers are searching for potential replacements.

Former Rangers star Ally McCoist has kept his optimism all season long, but has now revealed some hard truths on Martin‘s time at the club.

Ally McCoist makes Russell Martin claim after Rangers sack

Martin lasted just 17 games in charge of Rangers, and perhaps it was 17 games too long.

Things turned toxic at Ibrox, and it got to the point where Martin needed a police escort to his car, as fans tried to approach him after the game against Falkirk.

Russell Martin’s final record as Rangers boss

McCoist, speaking to talkSPORT, commented on Martin’s sacking and implied that the ex-Premier League head coach might have misjudged the challenge at Ibrox.

“The sacking of Russell Martin certainly isn’t a shock for anybody, the results first and foremost, I mean,” he said.

“We’re sitting eighth and we have a negative goal difference, so listen, there’s no surprise.

“I think the new owners and the old management staff probably underestimated the size of the job and the task.”

The 49ers and Cavenagh were bold to stick by Martin, but as the games have gone by, the Rangers’ job now looks almost an impossible job for anybody coming in.

The atmosphere at Ibrox is at an all-time low; however, with Rangers linked with Steven Gerrard, could the former Gers head coach re-ignite the season?

Steven Gerrard could bring life back to Ibrox

Gerrard‘s time at Ibrox is fondly remembered for an unbeaten season and multiple Old Firm derby day victories.

Though it may be too much to ask for any success this season, Gerrard would certainly do a better job than Martin has done.

It would be the best chance the owners have at reconnecting the fans to the football club, as not only is it the safe option, but it’s also a smart one.

With the international break here, Rangers have the perfect window to bring in Gerrard and give him time to settle in before action resumes.
