Russell Martin ‘destroying Rangers with a sledgehammer’ after what happened vs Sturm Graz

Rangers fell to a 2-1 defeat away at Sturm Graz in yet another disappointing performance.

The Rangers back line defended woefully as Sturm Graz took an early lead after a Jack Butland error, before amateurish defending allowed the hosts to double their lead.

Djeidi Gassama pulled a goal back, but it was not enough, as Rangers fell to another European defeat after a dismal start.

Russell Martin is coming under heavy fire, and the Rangers manager is under severe pressure as the fanbase want him gone.

Russell Martin ruining Rangers in Europe

Even in tougher recent domestic years, Rangers would at least perform well in Europe, with Barry Ferguson reaching the Europa League quarter-finals last season.

However, with Martin failing domestically, the Europa League provided him with an opportunity to win away from the Scottish Premiership, and to build upon Rangers’ traditional European nights.

Rangers were humiliated by Club Brugge in the Champions League, and are yet to win in the Europa League, and broadcaster Derek Clark has now slammed this new development.

“Another defensive disasterclass. Garbage yet fully expected first-half from Rangers. Russell Martin is taking a sledgehammer to what was a commendable European reputation,” Clark posted on X.

Ibrox was toxic against Genk, and this will continue with Martin in charge as fans have given their verdict on the former Southampton manager.

Rangers’ failures in Europe shows Martin needs to go

Martin needs to be sacked as soon as possible if Rangers are to salvage anything from this season, but it would take a monumental shift in the mind of Andrew Cavenagh to let him go now.

Sturm Graz was a winnable game despite their form, and Rangers were utterly second best for the first half.

Fans cannot even enjoy Ibrox on a Thursday as the European results and displays have not been up to par.

Martin has blamed the attitude of his players more than himself or his own tactics, now to the surprise of few, as he has always been someone to blame others rather than to take the heat off this team.
