Sturm Graz found joy early on as they faced Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday.

Russell Martin wasn't a popular figure even at Merkur-Arena on 2 October as the travelling supporters made their feelings known about him.

The Scottish manager finds himself under extreme pressure at the Light Blues, but he certainly wasn't helped by his players in Austria.

Martin's continuity at Ibrox has already become untenable, and he can't afford any slip-ups from his side, but that wasn't to be.

Rangers howler leads to first Sturm Graz goal

Ally McCoist blasted the Gers for their "horrendous" defending as Sturm Graz scored the first goal in the seventh minute.

Tomi Horvat beat Jack Butland after the Light Blues gave the ball away sloppily from their own throw-in.

Martin must certainly be wondering what the future holds for him at Ibrox after his team's "shocking" defending at the Merkur-Arena.

Speaking on TNT Sports 2 on 2 October at 20:10, McCoist said: "It's horrendous, horrendous. Rangers throw-in and look at that, and they're straight through. I'm staggered at that level of defending. Absolutely shocking defending.

"That's one howler of a goal to lose from your own throw-in. It's just far too simple. Far too easy."

Russell Martin sack inevitable at Ibrox

Martin may have no way back at Ibrox after losing to Sturm Graz, and it would be surprising to see the likes of Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart defend this situation.

The Scottish manager has had a woeful spell since being appointed in G51, and it would be cruel on him and the fans to delay a change.

  • Fans have protested against Martin at Ibrox.
  • The Gers won their first league match against Livingston on 28 September.
  • The Light Blues are eighth in the William Hill Premiership.

It's clear that the former Southampton boss isn't the right person for the job at Ibrox, and it's high time the American owners realise that.

Rangers can't continue to defend Martin any longer, and the Scottish manager's dismissal could potentially be announced at any moment.
