Rangers accused of being ‘daft’ as fans want Kevin Thelwell out of Ibrox

Rangers are certainly not helping themselves as fans want to see the back of Russell Martin, Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart.

The Gers have endured a woeful start to the campaign, with the Scottish manager winning just five of his first 15 matches since being appointed in G51.

Fans have called for Martin’s sacking in protests outside Ibrox, and the former Southampton boss has come in for a lot of abuse recently.

While most of the anger has been directed towards the 39-year-old head coach, Stewart and Thelwell may not be safe from Andrew Cavenagh either, but the American owners still seem to be backing the current management team.

Robbie Thelwell appointment comes at wrong time at Rangers

Robbie Thelwell’s possible appointment at the Gers couldn’t possibly come at a worse time, Roger Hannah says.

The Scottish journalist believes even if the Norwich City chief might be the right choice to be the new head of recruitment at Ibrox, the Light Blues are leaving themselves open to abuse.

Considering the 26-year-old is Thelwell’s son, the Glaswegian outfit would have arguably been better served by waiting for the current situation to calm down before making the appointment.

Speaking on ‘Clyde 1 Superscoreboard’ on 1 October, Hannah said: “How daft is it of Rangers to do this just now. Even if this young Thelwell is the real deal, and he might be… why would you do it just now, at a time when you’re leaving yourself open to more criticism and almost abuse?

“Because there are fans who want Stewart out, Martin out, and there are ones who want Thelwell out. Whether this is the right appointment or not, it’s the wrong time for this to be emerging into the public domain. Rangers should’ve waited till the current furore over the football department had calmed down.”

Andrew Cavenagh gives vote of confidence to Kevin Thelwell at Ibrox

Robbie’s appointment at Ibrox may indicate Thelwell senior is going nowhere, and the US consortium seem to have faith in him.

Since the sporting director’s son is potentially arriving in G51, it would be sensible to think that Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises have no intentions of making a change in the backroom staff anytime soon.

The same could possibly be true for Martin as well, with the American owners apparently reluctant to listen to supporters as calls for his sacking intensify.

Andrew Cavenagh risks becoming the next target at Rangers, with fans growing frustrated by the lack of action being taken by the decision-makers following a poor start to the season.

The US consortium promised to turn the tide at the Gers after taking over in May 2025, but things have arguably worsened in G51.

Only time will tell whether the American owners will regret their decision to back the current management despite no signs of progress in recent months.
