Rabbi Matondo sends new message as emotional retirement now confirmed

As Rangers prepare for their Europa League clash against Austrian side Sturm Graz, they will be once again without Rabbi Matondo.

Thursday is a chance for Rangers to record their first back-to-back victories of the season, and may be their best chance, with the game being away from home, as Ibrox has become toxic.

Matondo has been sidelined since the start of the season and has suffered setbacks on his road to recovery for Rangers.

With Matondo still out, Russell Martin will have to decide whether to play Djiedi Gassama or Mikey Moore on 2 October.

However, the winger has taken to social media to comment on some emotional news.

Rabbi Matondo reacts to new retirement message

Matondo has been touted with a Rangers exit, as fans have understandably grown frustrated with his fitness issues.

Matondo is on big wages at Rangers, and doesn’t seem to be in Martin’s plans anytime soon, especially after leaving on loan last season.

The Welsh international took to Instagram on Monday to wish his former Schalke 04 teammate Jeffrey Bruma a happy retirement.

Bruma enjoyed stints at Chelsea and PSV, but like Matondo, he was blighted with injuries throughout his career.

It remains to be seen whether or not Matondo will be able to recover from his injury issues, as a repeated hamstring problem has prevented him from consistently playing.

Injuries have damaged Rabbi Matondo’s career at Rangers

Matondo was once known for his explosive pace and ability to take on defenders. In the past, he has shown flashes of quality with crosses and dribbling, also scoring the occasional goal for the Gers.

Even if Matondo regains full fitness, it would be surprising to see him recover the speed he once had. There’s no doubt his injuries have taken a toll on his overall ability.

Gassama and Moore would most likely also be ahead of him in the pecking order, and it may be time to finally cut ties fully.
