Russell Martin breaks Rangers tradition as he does not help himself after sack latest

Rangers’ 2-0 loss to Hearts at Ibrox has condemned them to their worst start to a league campaign in 47 years.

Russell Martin is on the brink of the sack at Rangers as they sit 10th in the league, having also failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Rangers fans will start to turn on Andrew Cavenagh if Martin isn’t sacked and the Gers fall further behind arch-rivals Celtic.

And one pundit believes Martin was fighting an uphill battle with Rangers supporters due to his actions when he was appointed.

Shay Given believes Russell Martin did not help himself when he was appointed

Speaking on BBC’s Monday Night Club on 15 September, Given shared a key reason why Rangers fans never warmed to Martin.

He said: “Throughout history, every Rangers manager has worn a navy suit and brown shoes on the day they were appointed.

“Martin wore trainers, and straight away he broke the tradition of Rangers managers over 100 years.

“Straight away he’s on the back-foot with Rangers fans, and he’s not helping himself with some of the comments he’s made after games.”

Traditionally, managers wear this attire for match days, but Martin has adopted a much more casual look on the touchline, angering fans who believe the long-standing tradition should be upheld.

What makes matters worse is the dismal start to the season Rangers have made, as Martin still searches for his first Scottish Premiership win.

Russell Martin’s managerial record at Rangers

As Hibs travel to Ibrox on Saturday for a Premier Sports Cup clash, Martin must know that a defeat will surely be the end of his short Rangers career.

Jose Mourinho would be the dream manager for Rangers

Stunning reports have said that Jose Mourinho could become the next Rangers manager.

The legendary Portuguese manager has previously spoken about managing Scotland, yet Rangers would have to pay top dollar to acquire the services of the two-time Champions League winner.

He has managed many historic clubs, including:

Mourinho’s style of play would be completely different from Martin’s, prioritising defensive solidity and fast counter-attacking moves; something which Rangers fans would definitely get behind.

Having been sacked by Fenerbahce in August, Mourinho could eye up a return to the United Kingdom for his next managerial role.
