Andrew Cavenagh offered Steven Gerrard phone call as Rangers in historic slump

Steven Gerrard could potentially be Russell Martin’s replacement at Rangers soon.

The Scottish manager has led the Gers to their worst start in the league since 1978, failing to win any of the opening five league matches.

Andrew Cavenagh is backing Martin for now despite fans demanding a change in the dugout for several weeks now.

Hearts won their first game at Ibrox in 11 years after beating the Glaswegian outfit 2-0 in the William Hill Premiership on 13 September, leaving the former Southampton boss in an untenable situation.

Steven Gerrard should be first call at Rangers after Russell Martin sack

Former Gers title-winner Greg Stewart has offered to make an introductory call between Cavenagh and Gerrard, Andrew Newport says.

The Daily Record journalist revealed that the 2021 league champion at Ibrox believes the Light should contact the Liverpool icon to replace Martin.

During the Englishman’s spell at the Glaswegian outfit, he helped them stop Celtic from winning 10 in a row.

Speaking on Hotline Live on 15 September, Newport said: “[Greg Stewart] thinks Gerrard should be the first call. In fact, he’s even offered to make an introductory call for Cavenagh.”

Ibrox faithful will now welcome Steven Gerrard appointment

Gerrard was a candidate to take over at Ibrox after Barry Ferguson’s departure at the end of last season, but they ended up appointing Martin.

Many fans in G51 were left frustrated with the former Liverpool star for the manner in which he left the Gers for Aston Villa.

Since leaving, the ex-England international has struggled at Villa Park and Al-Ittihad, with his managerial credentials taking a massive blow.

However, it wouldn’t be surprising to see supporters welcome Gerrard back as Rangers are in a historic slump under Martin.

The Ibrox faithful have had enough of the Scottish manager at the Gers and want to see a change in the dugout immediately.

With the Light Blues already nine points behind Celtic and Hearts after five league matches, Cavenagh should be looking to make a change to turn things around.
