Michael Stewart doesn’t expect Russell Martin sack ‘for months’ as Rangers in crisis

Russell Martin is going nowhere despite Rangers losing to Hearts in the William Hill Premiership on Saturday.

Andrew Cavenagh has put his weight behind Martin after the 2-0 loss against the Jambos in the league on 13 September.

The fans have wanted to see the Scottish manager gone for some time now, but it looks like he still retains faith among those in the boardroom.

It may not be long before Cavenagh faces the ire of the Ibrox faithful, although there may be no intention of sacking the 39-year-old head coach anytime soon.

Rangers may continue to back Russell Martin even after loss vs Hibernian

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Martin remain in charge of the Gers for the coming months, Michael Stewart says.

The former midfielder has suggested that the Ibrox hierarchy could potentially continue to back the Scottish manager even if they lose to Hibernian in the quarter-finals of the Premier Sports Cup.

A lot of supporters have wanted to see the ex-Southampton boss leave since losing to Club Brugge in the Champions League play-off, but he has survived.

Speaking on the Scottish Football Social Club on 15 September, Stewart said: “You say there’s nowhere to go if they get knocked out of the cup, but you would’ve said that three weeks ago. [Martin] keeps getting backed. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s in charge for months to come.”

Hibernian will look to extend unbeaten record at Ibrox

Hearts ended their 11-year winless streak at Ibrox, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Hibernian get the better of the Gers in G51 on 20 September

Hibs are unbeaten in their last three matches against the Light Blues, and will be hoping to extend that record in the Premier Sports Cup.

Since the turn of the year, the Edinburgh club have won once and drawn twice against the Glaswegin outfit, which can be considered a significant improvement for them.

Martin’s record at the Gers this season

Martin already has nowhere to hide at Rangers, and a loss to Hibernian will only compound his problems in G51.

Hibs had failed to win any of their 12 fixtures before beating the Gers 2-0 at Ibrox on 5 April 2025.

Any slip-up in the coming matches should see the Scottish manager walk out the door, but that will undoubtedly depend on the American owners.
