Ex-Rangers chief continues to fail upwards as Newcastle come calling

Rangers have been inept in the transfer window for the past few years and that has primarily contributed to their lack of success on the pitch.

The Ibrox outfit have lost quality players like Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos on free transfers, while they have overpaid for certain names who have seldom improved the playing eleven.

Back when Dave King was at Rangers, a lot of importance was placed on the self-sustaining model, but seldom did it pay any dividends.

Ross Wilson bafflingly closes in on Newcastle move

Ross Wilson was Rangers’ sporting director from October 2019 to April 2023 and his tenure was marked by inconsistent recruitment, with several signings failing to deliver consistent impact, frustrating fans.

The team’s inability to sustain domestic dominance after the 2020/21 title, coupled with poor performances in cup competitions in later years, drew criticism.

Fan discontent grew over perceived mismanagement of transfer funds and failure to strengthen key squad areas, contributing to protests.

He then left Ibrox to join Nottingham Forest and he could be on the move again in the coming weeks.

The Sunday Mirror reported in its print edition on 31 August that Newcastle have Wilson as their top sporting director target and that they are confident of sealing his appointment.

He himself is said to be keen on the role, provided he’s given assurances of being at the forefront of the St James’ Park outfit’s transfer activity.

Rangers fans will be surprised as Ross Wilson keeps landing better jobs

Rangers fans will be stunned to learn that Wilson is closing in on a high-profile move to Newcastle as their new sporting director.

From 2019 to 2023, Wilson’s tenure began promisingly with the 2020/21 league title and a Europa League final appearance a year later. However, that quickly soured due to erratic recruitment.

Signings like Nnamdi Ofoborh, Juninho Bacuna and Rabbi Matondo flopped spectacularly, while certain stars like Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent left for the grand total of nothing despite huge bigs being made for them.

The Light Blues have largely failed to wrestle dominance of the nation’s game from Celtic, endured humiliating European exits and saw transfer funds squandered on underperformers.

Now, after a stint at Nottingham Forest, Newcastle’s owners are poised to appoint him to replace Paul Mitchell despite Rangers supporters being happy to see the back of him in 2023 for the chaos he left behind.
