MLS teams on alert as Cyriel Dessers breaks silence on Rangers transfer

Rangers could potentially be set for transfer enquiries from America for Cyriel Dessers.

AEK Athens have wanted the Nigeria international for some time now, but the Greek outfit have failed to reach an agreement with the Gers, who want around £6million.

The 30-year-old was the Light Blues’ leading goalscorer last season, and it remains to be seen whether they are willing to part ways with him.

Dessers may well remain at Ibrox for the rest of the 2025/26 campaign, but his recent statements may pique interest from the United States.

Dessers would like to end his career in America

Dessers chose the MLS as one of the leagues he would like to play in during the latter stages of his career.

The Nigerian centre-forward also named other “exotic” destinations like Japan and South Africa, along with his native country, as the 30-year-old plans for his future.

For now, while the ex-Cremonese striker is aware of interest from other teams, he’s happy at Ibrox, with two years remaining on his deal.

Speaking to SportsBoom (1 August), Dessers said: “It’s a hard choice, let me say something more exotic. But let me say a place like Japan, the United States (MLS), South Africa or Nigeria. It would be nice to play there.

“I still have two years left on my contract with Rangers. It’s a fantastic club, and I’m happy there. When you score that number of goals, it’s normal for other teams to show interest. I’ve seen the links with Olympiacos, but I don’t know anything specific about that. These kinds of rumours are normal.”

Rangers should sell Dessers as the time is right

Danilo has been Martin’s go-to number nine at the start of the season, leaving many questions among fans.

The Brazilian centre-forward’s consistent fitness issues make him unreliable, which is why the Gers need strength in depth up front.

While Dessers provides the Scottish manager with an option, many supporters seem to have grown frustrated with him due to his inconsistent performances.

Rangers signed the ex-Cremonese star in 2023 and could potentially make a hefty profit if their asking price is met. There seems to be interest in the 30-year-old this summer, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Gers cash in.

With the Nigerian striker not getting any younger, his valuation is only likely to reduce next year unless he has a stellar season in terms of goal contributions. The centre-forward should be sold, but only time will tell how the situation will unfold.
