Steven Gerrard in ‘glowing reference’ as Rangers return beckons

Steven Gerrard continues to be involved with Rangers.

The former Liverpool star took his first steps into management with the Glasgow giants and won the Scottish Premiership unbeaten in the 2020/21 campaign.

He then left for Aston Villa in the Premier League, but his stint below the border was ill-fated and did not work out.

He was linked with the recent vacancy at Ibrox before Russell Martin was appointed as Philippe Clement’s successor.

Gerrard backs Jim McAlister for Rangers return

Gerrard brought Jim McAlister to Govan in 2021, but the lifelong Gers supporter was dismissed in 2023 in controversial circumstances.

The Light Blues ended up paying compensation after McAlister claimed it was an unfair dismissal.

However, he now looks set to return, with Four Lads Had A Dream (24 July) reporting that Martin and the playing squad are in favour of the move.

Gerrard has also weighed in, with the Daily Record stating that he has sent a “glowing reference” to Bears officials about his former colleague.

Rangers return feels right for McAlister

The way that McAlister departed did not sit right with many observers at the time, and looking back, it reflects poorly on the Govan club.

The 39-year-old worked under the late Jimmy Bell and was promoted to head kitman after his passing, and Bell’s widow was left disgusted after the decision to sack him.

The new majority ownership, the 49ers Enterprises group and Andrew Cavenagh have been busy trying to fix the mistakes made by the old regime, which brought chaos to the boardroom rather than control.

The final decision will lie with Patrick Stewart, but given the feeling from everyone associated with the Gers about the return, it seems like it is almost guaranteed to happen.

If the players and Martin want it, then it would make no sense not to make the move and bring him back into the fold at Auchenhowie.

While McAlister looks set to return, Gerrard will not be coming back to the dugout anytime soon, especially if Martin proves to be a successful appointment.
