Matondo undergoes surgery in fresh blow as new Rangers return date set

Rabbi Matondo is set for a spell on the sidelines after undergoing surgery at Rangers.

As of right now, there is a remarkable sense of optimism in Glasgow, with Rangers showcasing plenty of ambition in the summer transfer market.

Wolves defender Nasser Djiga is set to become the latest arrival at Ibrox, after a loan deal was agreed with the Premier League outfit.

However, it wouldn’t be a summer at Rangers without something to cause concern, with the latest update on Matondo serving as just that.

Rangers set to be without Matondo for weeks

Matondo has been linked with a permanent exit from Rangers ever since the winter transfer window, though nothing materialised, and that is unlikely to change anytime soon.

That is because the winger has since undergone surgery to rectify a concern with his knee during the break between campaigns, as reported via the Glasgow Times (7 July).

Injuries have hampered his career at Ibrox, with the 24-year-old also having missed four months of the previous season due to a hamstring injury.

Thankfully, this latest setback isn’t likely to be as severe, with it claimed that Matondo will be back for selection in August, ahead of the new campaign.

Matondo future remains unclear amid injury blow

Since joining from Cercle Brugge in 2022, life at Ibrox certainly hasnt been plain sailing for Matondo.

The Welshman failed to score at all in his first season with the Gers, though he did find the net on six occasions in the following season.

However, injuries have constantly played a part in his inability to cement a place in the first team, and it is hard to see that changing next season.

Another loan move could be on the cards, or the Light Blues may look to cut their losses and secure a permanent exit for the 24-year-old.
