‘Dessers set to stay at Rangers’ amid imminent Ibrox sale

Cyriel Dessers has been a controversial figure at Rangers despite his goalscoring talents.

The striker finished the last campaign as the top scorer in the Scottish Premiership, but this has failed to win many fans over at Ibrox.

As a result, a departure has been mooted this summer, with AEK Athens keen on Dessers.

With the Nigerian international only having one year left on his deal, this summer could be Russell Martin’s last opportunity to make money on the 30-year-old.

However, the transfer window has many twists and turns.

Dessers could stay at Rangers amid impending Hamza Igamane departure

Hamza Igamane looks set to leave Rangers, with numerous clubs interested in the Moroccan.

The attacker was vital to the Gers last season and netted 16 goals in all competitions.

Four of these came in the Europa League, which proved to be vital as Rangers reached the quarter-finals.

As a result, Rangers are likely to demand £15 million for Igamane, with Lille interested in the forward.

Now, with the Champions League qualifiers less than a month away, Martin could be left short in attack for these vital fixtures if Igmane does depart in the coming weeks.

As a result, Rangers Review (28 June) has claimed that Dessers may be kept at Rangers for these matches if the Moroccan does depart.

The outlet reports that despite AEK Athens being keen on the striker, “the timing must be right”, especially if Igmane leaves Ibrox.

Therefore, the £5million-rated asset could remain at the Gers due to the potential short-term gains.

Martin has to prioritise Champions League qualifiers

The Champions League qualifiers will start for Rangers on 22 July when they take on Greek side Panathinaikos.

This will no doubt be a tricky tie, but certainly one the Glaswegians are capable of winning.

With Rangers only three ties away from the league stage, this has to be the priority for Martin.

Stars such as Dessers could be vital in these matches and prove to be the difference.

If no incomings are on the horizon for the clashes, departures must be delayed as the potential gains for qualification are massive.
