Cyriel Dessers ‘transfer in pipeline’ after development away from Rangers

Cyriel Dessers could potentially end his stint at Rangers in the current transfer window after signing from Cremonese in 2023.

The 30-year-old was part of Nigeria’s starting lineup against Ghana and Jamaica recently, scoring and assisting for the Super Eagles.

Dessers’ reputation at Ibrox hasn’t been the best among the fanbase despite scoring 29 goals this season, as the centre-forward leaves many frustrated at times with the chances he misses.

AEK Athens and Olympiacos have expressed interest in the striker, which he confirmed during a press conference on international duty.

Rangers exit on cards after Dessers comments with Nigeria

Dessers’ comments on his future could potentially mean an exit from the Gers is on the cards, Michael Gannon says.

The Scottish journalist believes the 30-year-old’s move away from the Light Blues may be in the pipeline after he confirmed speculation of AEK Athens and Olympiacos wanting to sign him.

Gannon finds it interesting that the Nigerian ace openly discussed the interest from Greece, suggesting that something could possibly happen this summer.

Speaking on Game On (6 June), the journalist said: “It’s sort of interesting that the speculation came from Dessers when he’s away with Nigeria. When talking about his future he said ‘well there’s interest from Greece and these two clubs’.

“You don’t often get a player who actually irks the speculation, which suggests to me there might be something coming down the pipeline.”

Russell Martin should sell Dessers at Ibrox

Russell Martin should sell Dessers in the ongoing transfer window to fund a move for a more reliable number nine.

The 30-year-old lost his place in the starting lineup for a brief period this season under Philippe Clement, but managed to get back into the team under Barry Ferguson.

Hamza Igamane burst into the scene at Ibrox, but was sidelined by the interim manager for the Nigerian centre-forward.

It would make sense for Martin, who’s been appointed the new permanent head coach at Rangers, to put his faith in the Moroccan youngster and develop him into a lethal striker.

As for Dessers, supporters wouldn’t mind seeing him leave this summer, giving the recruitment department an easy decision to make.

The 30-year-old’s stock is high right now after a rather decent end to the campaign at Ibrox, and it feels like the right time to cash in on him.

Danilo is another number nine the Light Blues should consider getting rid of in the ongoing transfer window due to his consistent fitness issues, which arguably leaves the Bears with a lot of business to do in the coming months.
