Jordan Henderson set for transfer as Rangers chances revealed

Jordan Henderson has been linked with a move to Rangers and Sunderland as he’s set to leave Ajax this summer.

The England international, who has made over 400 Premier League appearances in his career, could be on his way back to the United Kingdom.

The 34-year-old is currently playing for Ajax and has another year left on his deal at the Dutch side.

Sunderland and Rangers both have good chance to sign Henderson as Ajax want sale

According to Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij (25 May), Ajax want Henderson off the wage bill this summer.

He claims that there is a conflict with the club hierarchy and manager Francesco Farioli.

The latter wanted to keep him, while the Dutch side wanted him gone and they even parted ways with Farioli.

Recently, even Henderson admitted that his future is up in the air, potentially playing up speculation over a summer move.

It’s understood that a return to the United Kingdom this summer is very much on the cards for the former Liverpool captain.

Speaking on De Telegraaf podcast, Verweij said, stating he’s got a good chance to move to one of the two clubs: “He is also being linked to Rangers. Steven Gerrard is said to be the new manager there and he would like to bring Henderson over there.

“But Sunderland is his old club and of course he wasn’t in the stands for nothing.

“Ajax want to get rid of his salary, which is one of the conflicts between the Ajax management and Francesco Farioli.

“Farioli really wanted to keep him, Ajax wanted to get rid of his salary.”

“I think now that Farioli is gone, Henderson wants to leave too. He felt a lot of confidence. I think the road to one of those two clubs is open.”

Steven Gerrard unlikely to be named the next Rangers manager

While Steven Gerrard might push to sign Henderson, his former Liverpool teammate, for Rangers, his return as manager seems unlikely, leaving the decision to the incoming boss.

That could potentially be Davide Ancelotti, who appears to be the frontrunner at this point..

Henderson’s leadership and experience could bolster Rangers’ midfield, but his high wages and age may deter a new manager focused on youth and dynamism at Ibrox.

Ancelotti’s vision will likely prioritise versatile, high-potential players over Henderson, aligning with Rangers’ ambitions for domestic and European success.

Davide, influenced by his father Carlo’s philosophy, would likely target versatile, technically adept midfielders who blend creativity, work rate, and tactical intelligence.

He’d likely prioritise players in their mid-20s, capable of playing as box-to-box or attacking midfielders in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1.

These players would need strong passing, vision and pressing intensity to fit his high-possession, dynamic system.

Ancelotti Jr’s time at elite clubs suggests a preference for midfielders who can control tempo, break lines and contribute goals, ensuring Rangers dominate domestically and compete in Europe.
