Rangers supporters ‘to be concerned’ after what 49ers have decided on Nils Koppen

Rangers supporters are still waiting for the 49ers to complete their takeover at Ibrox.

Supporters in Glasgow will feel they have been waiting forever for the American investors to complete the deal, in the hope of preparing for a more positive season.

Although the wait is frustrating, the 49ers are putting things in place with Kevin Thelwell having been appointed following the expiry of his contract with Everton.

The new owners are also closing in on the announcement of a new manager to replace Barry Ferguson in the hot seat at Ibrox.

49ers make behind-the-scenes call at Ibrox

The takeover is not expected to go through at Ibrox until mid-June, so there is still some time to wait before things can ramp up at Rangers.

However, the 49ers are continuing to build foundations in Glasgow, ensuring they can hit the ground running when they finally get inside the stadium.

According to Keith Jackson (Daily Record, 26 May), that extends to recruitment preparation too as he claims that amid differences between Ferguson and technical director Nils Koppen, the 49ers may have been more inclined to put their trust in Koppen.

The report states that Ferguson would have sacked Koppen had he been given the job, but those incoming are happy to leave the Belgian in control of the transfer business this summer.

49ers have to show progress at Rangers

The 49ers can’t come in at Ibrox and get rid of everyone, but Koppen is linked quite closely to the current hierarchy at Rangers, suggesting keeping him in place may be too much of the past.

Rangers need serious improvement next season.

When it comes to transfers, that will surely be a big change marked by the arrival of the new investors, with an increase in finances available to spend during the summer transfer window.

However, if last summer is anything to go by, Koppen may not be the best man to have in place to be heading the recruitment strategy, especially with more money to play with.

A key area of failure for the Light Blues has been when it comes to transfers and recruitment, and the new owners have to recognise this upon their arrival.

The 49ers’ willingness to stick beside someone who has been unconvincing thus far will surely cause some concern among supporters.
