Rabbi Matondo footage ‘will leave Koppen feeling sick to his stomach’ at Rangers
Nils Koppen will be kicking himself at Rangers after what Rabbi Matondo did on his Hannover debut.
The 24-year-old left Ibrox for the Bundesliga 2 outfit on Thursday (30 January) on a loan deal until the end of the season.
And in true Gers fashion, the player considered surplus to requirements in Glasgow has made an instant impact on loan as Alexjg0 on X (2 February) shared footage of the forward scoring a fantastic debut goal in Germany.
Koppen worked tirelessly to secure an exit for Matondo throughout January, and with a measly £1million purchase option inserted into the deal [BILD], the Belgian may already regret his decision.
Rangers may have missed a trick with Rabbi Matondo
When Rangers appear to be learning from past mistakes, a relatively straightforward decision backfires tremendously.
While it is premature to say the decision to offload Matondo was a mistake, it is typical that the forward immediately hit the ground running at Hannover following his Ibrox woes.
One would have hoped the Light Blues would have learned from the Ianis Hagi debacle. The midfielder emerged as a key player under Philippe Clement this season after being frozen out of the first-team frame at the beginning of the campaign.
However, Hagi could also be on the move before the 3 February deadline as Ibrox News exclusively learned that Serie A outfit Genoa want to sign the Romanian international “immediately”.
Nevertheless, Koppen will be second-guessing his Matondo decision, especially considering he could fire Hannover back into the Bundesliga and leave Ibrox in a deal that would represent a £2m loss for the Gers.
Indeed, Matondo’s spell at Rangers was plagued by injuries, but he did show flashes of brilliance, particularly his sensational 93rd-minute equaliser in the 3-3 draw against Celtic last term.
Hopefully Matondo will show enough at Hannover for the German side to activate the purchase option, but not enough for the Gers to regret his departure. However, the early signs certainly lean towards the opposite outcome.
In other Rangers news, Zak Lovelace is “finished” at the Gers as the Millwall-linked ace is left out of the squad to face Ross County.
