Ally McCoist names ideal next Rangers manager live on air after Ibrox developments

Rangers are still in the hunt for a new permanent manager to take over from Philippe Clement, who was sacked in late February.

Barry Ferguson has been in temporary charge of the Gers since then and is keen to land the job on a permanent basis.

However, it is believed the Glasgow club will appoint externally as they aim to challenge Scottish Premiership champions Celtic.

Ally McCoist has revealed who he would like to see in the Ibrox dugout, with recent heartbreak potentially aiding that possibility.

McCoist wants Premier League legend at Rangers

It has been a season to forget for McCoist’s former side, with the Glasgow outfit well off the pace in the Scottish Premiership and cups.

The Gers are currently 17 points adrift of their old foes and were out of the title race months ago.

Rangers have been better on the European front, having been knocked out of the Europa League in the quarter-finals by Athletic Bilbao.

With the Ibrox outfit deep in their search for a new manager, McCoist has weighed in on who he would like to see in the dugout.

Speaking about Sunderland’s last-gap play-off triumph over Coventry City on talkSPORT (14 May, 08:50 am), he said: “I’d like Frank (Lampard) to have the Rangers job.”

Unfortunately for McCoist, his wish is unlikely to come true as Lampard may be eager to build on his relative success with the Sky Blues next season after this heartbreak.

Rangers should take Danny Rohl punt

Several contenders have been linked with the Ibrox job, with ex-manager Steven Gerrard among the named candidates.

Gerrard is the most successful Rangers manager in recent history, having lifted the Scottish Premiership title and halting Celtic domination at the time.

Another name linked with the job is Danny Rohl, who has enjoyed a successful stint at Sheffield Wednesday, with a break needed once again in Glasgow.

His time with the Owls has been overshadowed by controversy around the owners, which has in turn affected his position, with Rohl also linked with Southampton.

Ferguson admitted this week that he expects clarity on the manager situation within days, with his Tuesday press conference likely his last in this role.
