Ferguson tipped to stay on at Ibrox as Rangers 'problem' emerges - Exclusive

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Barry Ferguson has made no secret of his desire to stay on as Rangers manager permanently beyond this season.

The Rangers fanatic was brought in to steady the ship following the sacking of Philippe Clement in February and has had a mixed time of things.

Ferguson has overseen a rare away win at Old Firm rivals Celtic, as well as guiding Rangers past Fenerbahce into the Europa League quarter-finals.

However, domestic results have been as inconsistent as ever and there are strong suggestions someone new will be brought in over the summer.

Davide Ancelotti new favourite for Rangers manager's job

What started as a small rumour has gathered pace, so much so that Real Madrid coach Davide Ancelotti is now considered the overwhelming favourite to take charge at Ibrox.

Ancelotti, the son of legendary manager Carlo, has zero experience of managing a team himself which will of course be of concern to some.

Whether it be Ancelotti, Russell Martin or any other name mentioned for the job, Derek Ferguson believes it is important his brother Barry is kept on in some capacity due to a "problem" he has identified.

"Barry will still have a job at the club in his ambassadorial role, regardless of what happens," Ferguson exclusively told Ibrox News amid the latest managerial chatter.

"But everyone has seen the way he's spoken, in interviews and whatnot, and I think they should be looking at that. A position where he can have an influence, possibly on the training ground.

"We have a problem at the moment at Rangers in terms of the Scottish connection. The great Rangers teams that have been successful have had a core of those players and staff.

"These Scottish guys were not necessarily regulars but they were there and they know what the club means to the supporters. That's why I think they should look to find a role for Barry where he can have an influence.

"But that will be down to whoever the new manager is. Regardless, we need a core of Scottish staff and players because we're losing our identity right now.

"These players at the club now say they understand the club, but they clearly don't. This is why they're so inconsistent and why domestically they've been so below par.

"The Scottish lads understand that every single game you have to be at it, so it's important to get back to that core and I'd like to think there'd be a position for Barry."

Barry Ferguson has done all he can at Rangers

The results will ultimately speak for themselves, and Ferguson will simply be hoping for a second and third win on the spin to see out the season, starting with victory against Dundee United.

If that happens, he will have done all his possibly can to put his name forward as a realistic contender to stay on at Ibrox.

Regardless, it makes total sense for Ferguson to stay on in some capacity.
