Rangers ready to trigger release clause for in-form striker to seal Ibrox transfer

Rangers are gearing up for yet another summer revamp at Ibrox.

Every single year for what seems like an eternity, Rangers have faced a summer rebuild caused by woeful managerial appointments, terrible recruitment and a lack of consistency behind the scenes.

This summer, though, proves to be the biggest in a long time, with Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises set to become the majority owners of the Ibrox giants.

Rangers are also in the hunt to hire a new permanent manager, with interim boss Barry Ferguson unlikely to take the reins full-time once his poor spell in charge comes to an end.

But despite the overhaul, new sporting director Kevin Thelwell already seems to be pulling the strings at Ibrox with transfer targets starting to emerge.

Rangers line up Cypriot striker Evagoras Charalampous

Hamza Igamane’s debut season at Ibrox has been somewhat of a success, with the young striker arriving from obscurity in Morocco to score 15 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions this season for Rangers.

And it seems the Gers are willing to try and pull off another transfer similar to that with Anorthosis striker Evagoras Charalampous now linked with a move to Govan.

Cypriot news outlet 24Sports reported on Saturday (10 May) that Ibrox scouts have been stationed at the 19-year-old’s last three appearances in Cyprus’ top flight, in which he’s scored four goals.

It is understood that the Scottish Premiership side are now deciding on whether to trigger Charalampous’ release clause, which is set at a bargain fee of £42,000.

Charalampous is also attracting attention from 2. Bundesliga side Kaiserslautern, an unnamed Portuguese top-flight side and one of the biggest teams in Cyprus.

Who is Rangers target Charalampous?

Anorthosis signed Charalampous from Spanish side Granada in 2023.

The Nicosia-born striker has since played 16 times for his club, scoring five goals and supplying two assists, with all of those goal contributions coming this season.

Anorthosis are currently playing in the relegation section of the Cyprus League but four goals in his last three appearances have kept the Famagusta club well clear of the relegation zone, to the point where they’re actually level on points with Cypriot giants APOEL Nicosia.

Charalampous has been capped three times by Cyprus Under-21s, scoring one goal, which came against Israel’s Under-21s in a friendly in March.
