Celtic full-back Greg Taylor continues to be touted as an option for fierce rivals Rangers ahead of the summer transfer window.

Taylor is out of contract at Celtic next month and is therefore available on a free transfer, leading to suggestions that Rangers could pounce.

Pundit Michael Stewart recently said Rangers should look to get a deal over the line for the 27-year-old, who boasts Scottish Premiership and Champions League experience.

Taylor’s availability on a free, combined with that aforementioned experience, understandably makes him appealing to the Gers.

However, player-turned-pundit Derek Ferguson – the brother of manager Barry Ferguson – does not believe a move is worthwhile for neither Taylor nor Rangers.

Rangers told to forget Taylor transfer

Taylor was previously on Rangers’ books at youth level, spending six years on the blue side of Glasgow before joining Kilmarnock and then Celtic.

Those Rangers ties have long been cut due to his time with Celtic, however, and Ferguson believes the Gers should instead look elsewhere if they are to recruit another left-back.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Ferguson said: “He’s a good player and he’s played well over the past few years with Celtic, but the thing is, is it worth the hassle for him and his family?

“You’ve got to figure that in. Also, we’ve got Ridvan Yilmaz and Jefte. Jefte is a young guy who has a lot to learn and a lot of improvement to come.

“So I’d stick with someone like Jefte and maybe look to bring in someone else. But whether that should be Taylor, I’m not so sure.

“It’d be headline-catching, and I know he’s got connections with Rangers because he was at the club as a youngster and did ever so well, but for me – and this is not having a go at him – there are better options out there for Rangers if they are to raise the standards.

“Again, it’s nothing on Taylor because he’s a good player, but I think there are better out there than what we have to work alongside Jefte.”

Rangers must look elsewhere for transfer targets

Taylor wouldn’t be the first to cross the Rangers-Celtic divide, but as Ferguson himself says, it is just not worth the hassle.

The Scotland international, to give credit where it is due, is a more-than-established player at this level and would add something to the Rangers side.

But it is not a signing that would get the juices flowing among the Rangers fanbase, and it is worth exploring options further afield once the 49ers-led takeover goes through at Ibrox.
