Sutton can’t believe what he saw Rangers do at full-time v Aberdeen – ‘Pathetic’

Chris Sutton hit out at Rangers after their 2-2 draw with Aberdeen at Pittodrie on Sunday.

Rangers came from behind to earn a point against Aberdeen on 13 April, with second-half goals from Hamza Igamane and Ianis Hagi nullifying the hosts’ two-goal lead.

The game was not short of drama as Ross McCausland was sent off after receiving two yellow cards just 40 minutes into the game, while Hagi’s equaliser came just seconds before full-time.

Barry Ferguson and Co. looked doomed after the Dons doubled their lead in the wake of McCausland’s red card and deserve credit for fighting their way back into the match and delaying Premiership glory for Celtic.

Sutton hits out at ‘desperate’ Rangers

Considering the context within the game, it was no surprise that the Rangers players and staff went berserk after Hagi earned them a point right at the end of the game.

Ferguson’s side seemed pleased to have come from behind to play out a draw with Aberdeen, especially with a crucial UEFA Europa League clash with Athletic Bilbao coming up on Thursday, 17 April.

However, Sutton was quick to dismiss the idea that the late equaliser would stand Rangers in good stead for their trip to Bilbao.

The Sky Sports pundit pointed out that Celtic, who are 15 points ahead with five games left, have all but clinched the Premiership title and insisted that it is ‘pathetic’ of the Ibrox outfit to celebrate a draw against Aberdeen.

“Important in what respect? I mean, they have drawn the game”, Sutton said on Sky Sports Football (13 April, 2:20 pm).

“We can try and sort of skirt around, and say that the title [race] isn’t over. It’s absolutely over.

“Celebrating that goal at the end, it’s desperate stuff, isn’t it? It’s absolutely… it tells you where Rangers are at, it’s just pathetic.”

Kris Boyd argued that there is nothing wrong with Rangers celebrating a draw after being two goals and a man down, only for Sutton to say:

“How low is the bar, really?”

Ferguson focused on Athletic Bilbao trip

Ferguson will not be too bothered by Sutton’s comments as he will be focused on the trip to Bilbao on Thursday.

With Celtic winning the title being inevitable, the caretaker manager made nine changes to his starting line-up to face Aberdeen, choosing to rest some of his best players.

Rangers did well to hold Bilbao to a 0-0 draw after Robin Propper was sent off early in the game, and will now be hopeful of causing an upset in Spain in the second leg.
