Rangers in new boardroom twist as Andrew Cavenagh claim emerges at Ibrox
Andrew Cavenagh is a driving force behind the imminent takeover of Rangers and will have a significant impact at board level.
The healthcare mogul is joining hands with 49ers Enterprises to acquire a 51 per cent stake at Rangers, with the proposed deal now in the final stages of completion.
Cavenagh was in attendance as Barry Ferguson led the Light Blues to a victory over Fenerbahce to book a place in the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals and also saw the 3-2 victory at Celtic Park on Sunday (16 March) live.
It is only a matter of time before the US businessman comes into power at Ibrox, where appointing a new permanent manager will be high on his agenda.

Rangers board to rethink Ferguson decision after what Cavenagh saw
While Ferguson’s task is to only hold the fort until the end of the season, his triumphs over Fenerbahce and Celtic have convinced many that he is the man to lead Rangers under the new ownership too.
Having seen the win against Celtic live from the Sky Sports gantry, Scott Arfield reckons the Ibrox power brokers will be forced to rethink their stance over the former Gers captain.
Opponent | Competition | Result |
Celtic (A) | Premiership | 3-2 win |
Fenerbahce (H) | UEFA Europa League | 2-0 loss (3-3 on aggregate, 3-2 win on penalties) |
Fenerbahce (A) | UEFA Europa League | 3-1 win |
Motherwell (H) | Premiership | 2-1 loss |
Kilmarnock (A) | Premiership | 3-2 win |
The ex-Light Blues midfielder is also of the view that it will be no different for Cavenagh, who now has a decision to make regarding Ferguson after attending the game at Parkhead.
“Barry is making his doubters think again”, Arfield wrote in his column on the Record website (22 March).
“He’s maybe even forcing the men in the Ibrox boardroom who hired him in the first place to rethink their own opinions of him.
“Ultimately, it will be down to incoming owners Andrew Cavanagh and his partners from the San Francisco 49ers to decide if he’s Rangers management material.
“Cavenagh didn’t have a bad view himself at the weekend as he joined the Ibrox directors in the posh seats.
“We just need to wait and see if agrees with me, or like big Chris [Sutton], has his own opinion.”

Ferguson to land Ibrox job
It is not uncommon for incoming owners to make a marquee appointment by hiring a big-name manager.
However, that is perhaps not what Rangers need at the moment as they hope to rectify years of mismanagement under the US consortium.
That is why it would make sense for Cavenagh and Marathe to give Ferguson the job permanently and allow him to oversee the transition phase at Ibrox.
While Ferguson may not be the long-term solution for the Gers, he may just be the right man to helm the project under the new ownership for a season or two.
