Ferguson wants Souness appointment at Rangers as manager update shared – Exclusive
Barry Ferguson has done his Rangers job prospects no harm since stepping in, but a big decision awaits as to whether the club stick or twist.
The Gers favourite has won three of his five matches as caretaker manager, including a memorable 3-2 victory at Celtic last weekend.
Ferguson is now a strong contender to land the Rangers job permanently, but the Light Blues will not rush into making a decision.
Steven Gerrard and Russell Martin remain high on the list of contenders to take over, with Ibrox chiefs no doubt already hard at work behind the scenes.

Derek Ferguson wants Souness to play part in next Rangers appointment
Souness is a man who knows Rangers inside out and he played a part in finding Michael Beale’s Ibrox successor in 2023.
While the 71-year-old would have opted for Frank Lampard at the time over Philippe Clement, his input was still valuable in the search.
And Derek Ferguson believes it makes sense to hire Souness in a new behind-the-scenes role to help find the next boss – whether that be his brother Barry or someone else.
Fixture | Result |
Kilmarnock (a) | W 4-2 |
Motherwell (h) | L 2-1 |
Fenerbahce (a) | W 3-1 |
Fenerbahce (h) | L 2-0 |
Celtic (a) | W 3-2 |
“Souness brings an aura and a wealth of experience. It’s exactly the type of calibre of person we need at the club,” Ferguson exclusively told Ibrox News.
“I think he misjudged Rangers when he first arrived, but he learned very quickly. He knows the club inside out and he’s very passionate.
“He’s the type of person we need; someone with a passion but is also clever enough. This is why a lot of fans are being into the fact that Barry, [Billy] Dodds, [Neil] McCann and [Allan] McGregor are involved.
“The club have been crying out for this for years. Whether Barry is going to be in charge or not next season, get him involved.
“I’ve been saying for the past few years that Souness should be in a position behind the scenes. Clement may have felt threatened by his presence, but I’m of the opposite view. If you have someone with that experience and knowledge, get them on board.”

Rangers job is Ferguson’s to lose
The Rangers job is ultimately in Barry Ferguson’s hands between now and the end of the season.
Should he replicate the type of performances seen against Fenerbahce – in the first leg, at least – and Celtic, Rangers chiefs will surely have no choice but to give him the job permanently.
Ferguson effectively has two more months left to audition for the job before a decision is then made one way or another come the summer.
Continue winning matches and the job will surely be his.
