Barry Ferguson 'set to be appointed' permanent Rangers manager

Barry Ferguson has written himself into the Rangers history books once again.

The interim boss became the first Rangers manager in the last 10 years to win their first Old Firm game, after the huge 3-2 victory over Celtic at Parkhead on Sunday.

Goals from Nicolas Raskin, Mohamed Diomande and Hamza Igamane were enough to pick up all three points, in front of none other than Andrew Cavenagh ahead of his takeover.

Ferguson has not only beaten Celtic in his short stint so far, but has also guided Rangers to the quarter finals of the Europa League, getting past Fenerbahce.

Rangers to appoint Ferguson permanently

Tam Cowan believes that Ferguson will "surely" get the permanent role at Ibrox on Monday morning.

The outspoken journalist was delighted for the former Rangers midfielder, who has now beaten Brendan Rodgers and Jose Mourinho during his short spell in charge.

Writing on Instagram after the game at Parkhead, Cowan was certain of what would happen next.

He wrote: "Barry Ferguson (surely he'll be appointed full-time Rangers boss in the morning [Monday]?) has seen off both Jose Mourinho and Brendan Rodgers in just a few days."

Igamane sinks Celtic at Parkhead

Wow, what an afternoon that was.

With away fans back in the Old Firm, Rangers saved their best away performance at their rivals in years as Igamane smashed home in the final minutes.

Despite sacrificing a two-goal lead, their heads didn't slip and Ferguson must take credit for the mentality he has injected into this side.

Philippe Clement had drained that out of every last player in the squad before he was sacked, but the arrival of Ferguson, with the likes of Allan McGregor, has been huge.

Of course, the gap in the Scottish Premiership is impossible to bridge now, but that wasn't what Ferguson was brought in to do.

The former Bears skipper knows what it means to pull on that blue shirt, and making sure this current squad does too, is more than enough.

Whether Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe see that as enough to get the full-time job, remains to be seen, but he is surely a massive candidate now.
