SFA ‘to make example’ of Vaclav Cerny after Celtic v Rangers antics

Rangers star Vaclav Cerny could find himself in hot water after his actions in the 3-2 win over Celtic.

The Gers secured a famous win over their arch-rivals on Sunday (16 March) with a late Hamza Igamane strike.

However, the victory was soured by the Czech international squirting water at the home fans after the dramatic winner.

Supporters had only just been allowed back into Old Firm matches and the 27-year-old could have sparked a riot at Celtic Park so will likely have to face the consequences.

Scottish FA to ‘make example’ of Cerny after Celtic incident

The incident has caused controversy with the Rangers star set to be investigated by the Scottish FA.

Police Scotland are also investigating the matter, which former Scottish player Tam McManus believes is a huge overreaction.

However, speaking on Daily Record’s Hotline LIVE (18 March, 18:27 pm), Fraser Wilson and Daniel Caw agreed that the SFA need to make an example of the Bears ace.

Wilson said: “That was dangerous at the moment considering it was so late in the game and Rangers had won it in that moment.

“I think the authorities do need to make an example of him, just to nip it in the bud, although it wasn’t overly serious.”

Caw agreed, saying: “I agree with Fraser in the sense that they need to make an example of him, because look it’s silly, it’s a bit of water, he’s celebrating but that could have gone out of control and sparked really ugly scenes.”

Rangers may lose Cerny for significant period

The worst-case scenario for the Gers is an eight-match ban for the Wolfsburg loanee, which would be a nightmare for the Ibrox outfit.

Cerny has been in brilliant form recently, notching four goals in his last seven matches in all competitions and helping the Light Blues to reach the Europa League quarter-finals, where they will face Athletic Bilbao.

A domestic ban would not affect his availability for those crucial fixtures but it could hamper his match fitness in the build-up to them.

Mohamed Diomande may also find himself in trouble after his celebrations for the winning goal on Sunday after he pointed his fingers at Celtic fans and gestured firing a gun.

The SFA have taken action against similar incidents in the past, so the 23-year-old may find himself sidelined in the near-future.

A domestic ban would not really punish the Bears as the gap to their Glasgow rivals in the Scottish Premiership is 13 points but like Cerny, it would hinder his preparation for the Bilbao clash.

The Govan outfit will have to wait for the investigations to finish to find out any respective punishments but they will hoping that bans are avoided and fines are the preferred deterrent but it remains to be seen how far the SFA decide to take things.
