Rangers takeover: 49ers Enterprises won’t ‘spend millions and millions’ amid red tape
Craig Moore has predicted that there are exciting times ahead for Rangers after key takeover talks at Ibrox.
It has been a disappointing season for the Light Blues with a string of poor performances and results leaving the Gers well away from where they want to be.
However, with takeover talks said to be underway between the 49ers Enterprises and the current Glasgow outfit’s ownership, better times could be around the corner.
Moore says 49ers won’t invest heavily in Rangers squad initially
Although Philippe Clement is the one in charge of the squad and overseeing things at Ibrox, to blame Rangers’ problems solely on him would not reach the root of the problem.
Clement certainly has responsibility to take for how poor and inconsistent things are on the pitch which leaves the Light Blues competing miles away from where they want to be.
However, the hierarchy in Glasgow have shown mismanagement of the club for some time now and with finances not being treated properly, it has left Rangers in a tough situation.
Now the Light Blues are miles away from competing with Celtic, who sit 13 points above them in the table, and only the Europa League left in terms of cup competitions.
With that in mind, reports that 49ers Enterprises are said to be in advanced talks over a takeover for Rangers, to take the majority shareholders will no doubt be filling many with some optimism.
Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, former Rangers captain Moore admitted this is just what his former side need but says with financial rules in place, supporters should not expect large sums to be spent on the playing squad straight away.
Moore said: “I think the Rangers situation we have discussed for quite a long period of time. I have always felt for Rangers to really spring board to a new level, I always felt outside investment was key.
“That always seemed like it was going to be a struggle with the way the club was run and the shareholders and not everybody necessarily being on the same page. Progression was difficult but I am excited by the discussions and talks by all accounts in place now.
“It is really important for fresh investment. That doesn’t mean there is all of a sudden millions and millions of pounds thrown at a team. There are still rules and regulations. But I feel that the club for a number of years has poorly performed on and off the field.
“I feel now is a really good time and I know this won’t happen tomorrow but phasing into potentially next season, I think it is going to put Rangers in a position where people can finally be a little bit excited about progression.”
Rangers have to embark on a new era without Philippe Clement
Although the Gers lost 2-0 against St Mirren on Saturday (22 February), this has not proven to be enough so far to push the Rangers hierarchy to make a managerial change – at least not yet.
Therefore, this does leave questions over whether anything will push the manager out at Ibrox in the remainder of this season, with some suggesting that finances are the only reason Clement has stayed put so far.
Nevertheless, whatever happens in the interim, it is clear that Clement has not done enough to stake his claim as the man who has the ability to really progress with the Gers going forward.
Supporters are not crying out with unrealistic expectations. However, they simply demand to see a side that is trying at the right end of the table, doing what they can to bring success to the club.
Wins | Draws | Losses | |
Rangers | 17 | 5 | 5 |
Celtic | 22 | 3 | 2 |
As Moore says, it feels like investment and a big push forward has been needed in Glasgow for quite some time now and if new owners can strike a deal to takeover the club they have to be ruthless in order to achieve their aims.
Therefore, a new era really has to be marked which would leave Clement and the old board well behind.
