Cameron update shared by Clement after Rangers agreement

Rangers ended the January transfer window by making just one new signing, much to the disappointment of the fans.

Given how terribly the season has gone so far and the significant gap in the league from rivals Celtic, the expectation was that the window would see the club right some of the wrongs.

However, they did not appear to do that with Rafael Fernandes being the only one who joined from Lille on loan.

Philippe Clement wanted Lyall Cameron in January

While Gers did secure a pre-contract agreement with Lyall Cameron for the summer transfer window, Philippe Clement admits he wanted the 22-year-old right away.

Via the Daily Record, he said: “At the end, that’s a financial decision. We all wanted him to come as fast as possible, but it was not possible. So we need to wait a few months longer.”

Cameron is undoubtedly a quality player and he has been labelled “Extremely talented” by Dundee manager Tony Docherty.

Signing him in January could have significantly bolstered Gers’ midfield and potentially closed the gap with Celtic.

Cameron, a standout for Dundee with eight goals and seven assists this season, has proven himself as a dynamic playmaker capable of both dictating play and contributing directly to the scoreline.

His arrival would have added much-needed creativity and depth to a squad that has been criticised for its lack of innovation and goal-scoring threat from midfield.

Rangers need to sort out their structure behind the scenes

The financial constraints that prevented this transfer highlight deeper structural issues within the club’s management.

Their inability to secure Cameron immediately, despite Clement’s clear desire, underscores a lack of financial planning or flexibility in the transfer market.

This season’s disappointing performance, coupled with the minimal activity in the January window, suggests that the current board structure, led by figures like Patrick Stewart, might not be agile or proactive enough in the transfer market.

The reliance on loans and pre-contracts, rather than outright purchases, when immediate squad enhancement is needed, indicates a need for a strategic overhaul.

Gers must address these financial and strategic shortcomings to compete effectively with Celtic and ensure they do not repeat the same mistakes in future windows.
