Dessers exit: Rangers would have accepted permanent Ibrox exit after offers

Cyriel Dessers has been linked with a Rangers exit since the summer transfer window despite ending the campaign last season as their top scorer.

The Nigeria international has once again found himself towards the top end of the Gers’ scorers but his composure in the final third is still managing to send fans and pundits around the bend.

In fact, it felt like his poor form in front of goal was even starting to get to Philippe Clement at one point after Dessers found himself as the backup to summer signing, Hamza Igamane.

He’s since found his way back into the first team but that didn’t stop the rumour mill from turning about his future with his agent saying that the number nine had over 10 offers to seal an Ibrox exit.

Rangers keep Cyriel Dessers in the winter transfer window

It’s no secret that Rangers needed to chop down their wage bill in order to try and fund the arrival of some new players at the halfway point of the season.

Which is why both Kieran Dowell and Rabbi Matondo were shown the exit door as they had little to no impact on the way that things panned out at Rangers in the first half of the season.

However, in Dessers’ case, it seems that Clement chose to keep the striker among his ranks as no offers came in that met their value of the attacker.

And, speaking on the Go Radio Football Show (6 February), Mark Guidi shared his thoughts on the lack of movement for Dessers.

“I think they were only going to go for it if it was a transfer fee [allowing Dessers to leave], or else if there was an obligation to buy at the end of the loan,” he said.

“So, if clubs only wanted a four-month loan and then send him back then no, that wouldn’t appeal to Rangers and I suppose it would have been easy for Patrick Stewart to say ‘no he’s going because we’re getting him off the wage bill’ and we know that there’s a pressure on Rangers to cut their costs but they’ve hung onto him.

“I would imagine that off the back of the two goals, brilliant finishes, one at Old Trafford and one at Tannadice, they thought, ‘do you know what, we’re still in Europe, we’ve got a chance for the Scottish Cup, we need to deliver something and we’ve got a better chance of doing that with Cyriel Dessers in the squad’.

“So, fair play to them.”

Philippe Clement still has a lot to prove at Ibrox

At the start of the season, fans were calling for the head of the Belgian due to the poor start that the Ibrox outfit had to the campaign.

Most fans didn’t see a future for their team under the 50-year-old with his tactical choices often leaving fans questioning why they bothered to turn out for their team each week.

Much like the winter window, the Gers’ summer moves weren’t all that great either with only Igamane and Vaclav Cerny being the ones to prove their worth.

While Clement may have led his men to a top-eight finish in the Europa League, it still feels like a lot more could come from the Ibrox outfit.

And, if the Belgian wants to prove his worth to fans, he needs to ensure that he gets the most out of his squad, no matter the opponent.
