Rangers ‘to sign another defender’ after John Souttar development at Ibrox

Rangers may sign another centre-back in the summer transfer window to partner John Souttar, Chris Jack says.

The Rangers Review journalist believes the Light Blues will enter the market next summer to bolster their backline.

Jack expects the Gers to sign a defender in the coming months despite having Robin Propper, Clinton Nsiala, Leon Balogun and Rafael Fernandes in their ranks currently.

Speaking on The Rangers Review (5 February), the journalist said: “At the start of next season, I think Souttar starts.

“I think they’ll be looking for a partner for him. Is it going to be Nsiala or someone else… Fernandes? I don’t think it will be Leon Balogun.

“I think we will see Rangers go back into the market in that area.”

Rangers to partner John Souttar with new defender transfer

Souttar has been the Glaswegian outfit’s best centre-back this season, starting in most fixtures before his injury issues.

The 28-year-old has played alongside the likes of Propper and Balogun this season, but neither of them have necessarily complemented the Scotsman.

Philippe Clement had to make several changes to the Bears’ starting line-up during the fitness crisis in defence, leading to the emergence of Nsiala.

Rangers fans have been relatively surprised by the quality the 21-year-old has shown at Ibrox in the current campaign and could be one for the long term already.

Leon King’s time seems to be up at the Light Blues, as he has hardly featured for them despite Clement being desperate for centre-backs.

Propper hasn’t convinced many supporters since his move from Twente last summer, and what the future holds for the Dutch national remains to be seen.

With Balogun not getting any younger and Fernandes still an unproven star, it would be wise for the Gers to sign another defender soon.
