Shearer shocked by ‘crazy’ Cyriel Dessers moment after seeing Rangers footage

Cyriel Dessers was at the end of a logic-defying tackle by Kacper Lopata as Rangers beat Ross County 4-0 on Sunday, according to Duncan Shearer.

Upon watching the highlights of the Scottish Premiership game at Ibrox on 2 February, the Aberdeen legend hit out at Lopata for committing a “crazy” foul on Dessers, allowing Ianis Hagi to score from the resulting free-kick.

Shearer cannot believe the defender thought he could get away with the challenge on the striker and is certain that even the Ross County coaching staff would have been baffled by it.

“Having watched the highlights from Ibrox, I picked up on Rangers’ second goal (after 25 minutes) after defender Kacper Lopata fouled Cyriel Dessers on the edge of the box”, Shearer wrote in his column on Press and Journal‘s website (4 January).

“From that free-kick, Ianis Hagi scored his second goal, via a lucky deflection off Jonathan Tomkinson, before John Souttar added a third goal before the break.

“How Lopata thought for one minute he could get away with a tackle like that, I don’t know.

“It was a crazy thing for a centre-half to do. It defies logic, and Don [Cowie] and his staff will be saying: “What was he thinking?”

Cyriel Dessers stays put at Rangers despite transfer talk

The winter transfer window was an interesting period for Dessers as he was linked with a move away from Ibrox, while also clawing his way back into Philippe Clement’s starting line-up.

He was heavily touted for a return to Italy in the days leading up to the deadline, with Cagliari interested in acquiring his services [La Gazzetta dello Sport] but eventually stayed put.

This came after the Nigeria international bagged six goals and two assists across all competitions in January.

While Rangers could have used his recent run of form to demand more money for a transfer, they ultimately decided to keep him at least until the end of the season [Scottish Daily Mail].

Having earned his way back into Clement’s first XI, Dessers will be hopeful of remaining an important player for the Gers between now and the end of the season.

After all, that will only help the Glasgow giants achieve their targets on the pitch, while also giving them an upper hand in transfer negotiations in the summer.
