Rangers ‘to repeat transfer trick annually’ after what happened on Deadline Day
Rangers will continue to recruit from the Scottish market annually after the signing of Lyall Cameron, according to Joshua Barrie.
Barrie explained in his transfer window review for The Rangers Review [4 February] that with Cameron following in the footsteps of Connor Barron, the Light Blues will continue to recruit from within Scottish football as part of a long-term strategy.
The Gers announced the pre-contract signing of Cameron on Deadline Day (3 February), with a compensation package of £400,000 to be paid to Dundee when the midfielder arrives at Ibrox at the end of the season [Daily Record].
Barrie wrote: “The 22-year-old is far from a finished product but is seen, like the signing of Connor Barron, as a common sense signing. Rangers want to recruit from the Scottish market annually.
“This is a low-risk, low-cost move for a player who knows the league and will receive a wage that doesn’t break the bank.
“Some have pointed to the likes of Aaron Hickey and Lewis Ferguson as previous examples of players not pursued at Ibrox that ought to have been.”
Rangers to work with a clear approach in the transfer market
Given Rangers’ long list of well-documented transfer failings, the supporters will be overjoyed to learn that a well-thought-out strategy has now been implemented at Ibrox.
Although question marks have emerged surrounding Barron’s ability to be a regular starter in Glasgow, the 22-year-old has shown consistent performances when called upon despite playing catch-up to Nicolas Raskin and Mohammed Diomande.
After all, the Gers will need to boast a first-team squad brimming with quality and sufficient depth across the pitch to close the ever-growing gap to Scottish Premiership rivals Celtic.
Cameron is an astute acquisition – despite Dundee fighting a relegation battle in the SPFL, the young midfielder has contributed eight goals and seven assists to the cause this term, more than any other of the current Rangers midfield crop.

While Clement is chasing Celtic, the Light Blues are still a force to be reckoned with in Scotland and are well-positioned to offer the best talent in Scottish football a platform to showcase their abilities.
Meanwhile, a healthy balance between acquiring talent overseas must be sought, with Hamza Igamane immediately hitting the ground running at Ibrox this year following his summer move from FAR Rabat.
