Ally McCoist slams ‘controversial’ moment after what Rangers star did v Union SG
Ally McCoist was quick to slam Vaclav Cerny’s impact in the build-up to Rangers’ opening goal against Union St Gilloise on Thursday.
Philippe Clement’s side took an early lead at Ibrox on 30 January, with James Tavernier’s cross into the box coolly headed home by Nico Raskin after 21 minutes.
However, the Gers made things a little more difficult for themselves after Taverner’s short corner into Cerny bobbled back to the attacking full-back before firing a deadly cross into the penalty area.
Speaking live via TNT Sports 3 [30 January, 8:21pm], McCoist said: “It’s a really well-worked goal but I’m going to be really controversial right from the start. It’s not a good touch back from Cerny, and I was just about to say that but I’m glad I didn’t.
“It’s almost a rehearsal corner. It’s played to Cerny, it’s not a good ball back there but it’s a good touch [by James Tavernier] and that delivery is superb. Propper and Raskin, excellent.”
Vaclav Cerny almost messes up Rangers set piece v Union SG
Given how mesmerising and accurate Cerny has been during his loan spell at Ibrox, it was an odd moment to see him so sloppy in such a dangerous moment for the Light Blues.
However, with Tavernier’s incredible delivery and Raskin’s delightful header, the pass back to the playmaker will now be overlooked as quite a small moment in such a crucial match.
Despite not getting a goal contribution for the match-defining moment, he can still boast 13 goals and seven assists across all competitions this season, which is truly incredible.
Supporters will be anxious for the Gers to strike a permanent deal for the winger, who is attracting interest from other clubs in Europe, and there is no wonder why.
He has been an incredible addition to Clement’s squad this season, and if the Light Blues can strike a deal for him in the summer, it would certainly keep a number of supporters happy.
