Rangers v USG: VAR caught in ‘Astonishing’ incident at Ibrox live on air

Alasdair Lamont was “astonished” as Cyriel Dessers had a goal ruled out for offside during Rangers’ 2-1 win over Union St Gilloise on Thursday.

The 30-year-old thought he had doubled the Gers’ lead at Ibrox on 30 January, only to see his effort disallowed following a VAR check, adjudged to be narrowly offside.

With many supporters believing the striker was actually onside, the incident has caused some controversy, especially with the live television feed not showing any lines being drawn by VAR.

Speaking live via BBC Radio Scotland [30 January, 8:45pm], Lamont said: “I’m astonished,” before Steven Thompson added: “How is that not a goal?”

There is certainly an argument to be made about the disallowed goal, with fans all over social media arguing that Dessers was actually onside before volleying home past goalkeeper Anthony Moris.

The Nigerian striker is often criticised for his performances, but with goals in three consecutive games before Thursday night, some fans have even questioned the harshness of some of the digs aimed at him.

Despite this, the majority of fans are still hoping Dessers can find a new home before the transfer window slams shut on 3 February, with Hamza Igamane the first-choice centre-forward for Philippe Clement.

The 22-year-old has netted 13 times since arriving from FAR Rabat during the summer, already proving to be an incredible purchase, and it has seen Dessers edged out to the fringes of the starting XI.

Luckily for the Light Blues, both strikers have been in fine form in recent weeks, which was important for their Europa League clash as the Gers qualified for the round of 16 by the skin of their teeth.

The disallowed goal did not have a lasting impact on the game, even despite USG’s late goal, but VAR crept into the game a little too much for the supporters’ liking at Ibrox.
