Cyriel Dessers ‘Amazing’ despite Rangers criticism v Union SG

Tom English has piled praise on Cyriel Dessers for his performance against Union Saint-Gilloise on Thursday despite recent criticism from Rangers fans.

The Nigeria international has been a divisive figure during his spell at Ibrox for missing plenty of chances while also scoring regularly but helped push the Bears into the final 16 of the Europa League.

Despite not getting on the scoresheet, the 30-year-old grabbed an assist to cap off an excellent showing in the 2-1 win against the Belgian outfit at Ibrox.

Writing via his X account, English said: “Big Dessers very good again tonight. Amazing resilience.

“The flak that guy has had to put up with is unreal. Tough boy with burgeoning confidence. Fair play to him.”

Cyriel Dessers shines for Rangers v Union SG

If the former Cremonese forward performed as he did at Ibrox on Thursday night every week, he would be famed as one of the best Gers players in recent years.

There was so much to appreciate about his performance against USG, from his ability to hold the ball up while also looking menacing with the ball at his feet.

This just hasn’t been an element of Dessers’ performances on a game-by-game basis which is where frustration has come from.

Although some supporters do take criticism too far, there is typically reasoning behind this and will be hoping that the Nigerian can carry this form forward.

With a clash against Ross County coming up on 2 February, the striker has the opportunity to prove himself to the Ibrox faithful once again.

It will certainly be interesting to see if he can do that to prove the fans who were so negative towards him wrong, as his contributions continue to grow again.
