Robbie Savage baffled by Manchester United v Rangers claim he heard

Robbie Savage has been left baffled by the fact that the Europa League clash between Rangers and Manchester United on Thursday was dubbed the “Battle of Britain”.

The Gers were defeated 2-1 by Ruben Amorim’s men in the dying embers of their European fixture despite netting an equaliser in the 88th minute of the game.

Philippe Clement’s men now find themselves 13th in the Europa League table, three points adrift of the top eight spots.

Writing for the print edition of the Daily Mirror (25 January, page 67), Savage shared his thoughts on the clash.

“Bruno Fernandes dug Manchester United out of a hole with their late winter against Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday night,” Savage wrote.

“But I’m not having the tie being labelled the ‘Battle of Britain’ when it was 13th in the Premier League against distant runners-up in Scotland.

“The real Battle of Britain would be Liverpool v Celtic, the leaders north and south of the border.”

Rangers need to get into the top eight of the Europa League

As Savage pointed out, at the moment, Rangers are the distant runners-up in the Scottish Premiership with 13 points separating the two teams at the top of the table.

Things haven’t gone quite to plan for Philippe Clement and his men this season with the Gers losing out on the Scottish League Cup to their arch-rivals as well as dropping out of the top-eight spots in the Europa League thanks to a 92nd-minute equaliser.

Indeed, the Ibrox outfit could try and source some new faces in the winter transfer market to try and bolster their ranks and improve their chances but without the sale of some deadwood players such as Rabbi Matondo and Kieran Dowell, that seems rather unlikely to happen.

However, if Rangers can make their way into the top eight spots of the Europa League and go straight into the knockout rounds, it would at least give fans something to be thankful for and would allow the team to get some extra rest, which is evidently needed.

In other Rangers news, the Gers could be tempted by sanctioning the exit of a first-team ace if the money is right.
