Harry Maguire was "awful" as Cyriel Dessers scored for Rangers against Manchester United in the Europa League, Troy Deeney says.

The ex-striker slammed the Englishman's defending as the Nigerian equalised in the 88th minute at Old Trafford on Thursday (23 January).

Deeney was baffled by Maguire's actions but credited Dessers for his finish, with the game eventually ending 2-1 after Bruno Fernandes' late goal.

Speaking on talkSPORT (23 January, 21:50), the 36-year-old said: "What a goal.

"This is just a long diagonal from Tavernier. Maguire, awful, awful defending. Just go and head it. But take nothing away from Dessers."

Rangers unfortunate after late goal v Manchester United

The Ibrox faithful must have gone into the game in high spirits, considering United's poor form over the last few weeks.

Philippe Clement and his team had the opportunity to take points away from Old Trafford and almost did so, if not for the stoppage-time goal.

The Light Blues didn't create a lot of chances, but that was expected as they went up against one of the biggest teams in the Premier League.

Rangers haven't been at their best by any means this season, but they've managed to turn the tide a bit in the last few weeks.

The Light Blues were without Ianis Hagi and Danilo for the trip to Old Trafford and their absence was evidently felt.

While the fans will be disappointed by the loss, they can take some positives away from the exciting fixture and hope for better things to come.

Ruben Amorim has some of the world's best players at his disposal, and the Bears went toe-to-toe against them, which should invoke some pride in the team.

The Gers have the chance to bounce back soon as they face Dundee United in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday (26 January).
