Man United v Rangers: Ally McCoist slammed by SNP MSP for comments live on air
Ally McCoist was slammed by SNP MSP James Dornan for comments he made live on TNT Sports during Rangers’ Europa League defeat to Manchester United.
The Gers great labelled the travelling supporters “amazing” as the away end at Old Trafford could be heard making anti-Catholic chants.
During the game, TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher spoke about the atmosphere coming from the away end during the live coverage of the fixture.
“I’ll let you speak about them,” he said to McCoist.
The former Scotland striker, on co-commentary, replied: “They’re amazing that lot.”
Dornan took to X to condemn the comments, saying: “Just heard everyone’s favourite football pundit, Super Ally, praising the Rangers fans just as the sing [expletive]. Only in Scotland is this acceptable.”
Ally McCoist criticised for Rangers fans comments v Manchester United
The issue of sectarian chanting is one that the football authorities do need to do more to get a grasp on because it is a prominent issue in Scotland, not just at Rangers.
In terms of McCoist, you do have to cut him some slack. He was working the game for TV, engrossed in the game, and there is every chance he was not even truly aware of the nature of the chants being sung while he was working.

It is harsh to single McCoist out for criticism when he was there working and actually pointing the finger of blame at the Gers legend actually dilutes the issue at hand.
Rangers put in a fantastic performance at Old Trafford, losing 2-1 in heart-breaking fashion, and unfortunately, a couple of incidents away from the football have taken the shine off that a little bit. But having a pop at McCoist feels a little harsh.
In other Rangers news, the club could receive a letter of apology from Manchester United for one incident during the game.
