Clement to look ‘weak’ with Jack Butland Rangers decision v Dundee United

Philippe Clement would look “weak” if he were to backtrack and drop Jack Butland from his Rangers starting XI for Liam Kelly, Fraser Wilson has said.

Butland has missed a fair few games over the last month due to an injury he suffered, which saw Kelly come into the team and put in some solid performances.

But, as soon as the Englishman was fit again, Clement dropped Kelly and put his regular number one back between the sticks.

However, things didn’t exactly go to plan as the former Stoke man made a couple of mistakes against Manchester United and was the reason they conceded the opener.

Writing for the print edition of the Daily Record (25 January, page 53), Wilson shared his thoughts on who should start between Butland and Kelly for their game against Dundee United on Sunday (26 January).

“I was surprised he was thrown straight back in for such a big occasion,” he wrote.

“Liam Kelly had been performing well enough. “However, to backtrack and drop Butland now would look weak and he has to respond positively.”

Jack Butland needs to pick his head back up at Rangers after Man Utd horror show

To be quite frank, with Kelly in goal against United on Thursday, it feels like the Ibrox outfit could have managed to come away with at least a point to their name.

United’s opening goal was conceded due to Butland’s error that saw him come out for the ball and then mistime his punch.

While there’s no denying that in a general sense the former Crystal Palace ‘keeper is a better player than Kelly, after just coming back from injury, playing your first game against the Red Devils is a lot to ask.

Even though Butland might not feel all that great after his performance, he just needs to think of it as a bump in the road so that he can return to his absolute best form as the second half of the season gets underway.

Because, if he lets it get him down and gets into his head, he could end up doing a lot worse than losing a league stage game as the season goes on.
