Ally McCoist explodes at Jefte footage in Rangers loss v Manchester United

Ally McCoist destroyed Rangers defender Jefte for his slack defending as Manchester United scored their winner late on Thursday.

The Gers looked to have secured a draw at Old Trafford in the Europa League (23 January) with Cyriel Dessers scoring an 88th-minute equaliser.

However, the hosts responded through a Bruno Fernandes strike in the 92nd minute after he escaped the Brazilian, Jefte at the back post with ease to seal a 2-1 win.

Speaking live on TNT Sports (23 January, 21:55), McCoist could not believe it: “Jefte, you don’t switch off, look at him at the back post, he’s just let him run behind him.

“That’s your man, don’t switch off. Shocking defending.”

Heartbreak for Rangers at the death

The Bears showed great heart and passion to fight back and level the contest after Jack Butland had somehow bundled the ball into his net.

However, that hard work was undone when the 21-year-old was caught out at the back post, in a heartbreaking twist for the away side.

The Red Devils captain made no mistake when drifting in behind Jefte to leave Philippe Clement’s side regretting what could have been.

The result leaves the Gers on the verge of a play-off place but they will struggle to secure automatic progression to the round of 16 even if they beat Union Saint-Gilloise at Ibrox on 30 January.

There are four teams between them and the final automatic spot in the league-phase standings and they will need a miracle on the last gameday if they are to finish in the top eight.

A playoff spot is not the end of the world but after heading into the contest with a chance of a top-eight finish, it will sting.
