Rangers transfers: Winner named in Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday race

Coventry City look set to win the race to sign Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo on loan, according to Darren Witcoop.

The journalist reported on 22 January that Frank Lampard’s side look set to beat Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday to the signing of the Wales international.

The Championship sides were keen on signing the 24-year-old on loan but a move to the Sky Blues now appears to be close to completion.

The former Schalke forward has had a tough season under Philippe Clement, making just six appearances while dealing with injury concerns.

Despite this, the Welshman has still managed to score two and assist two in the Scottish Premiership which has piqued the interest of Championship sides.

Matondo has already spent time in the English second tier, spending the second half of the 2020/21 season with Stoke City.

Although this wasn’t necessarily a success, this hasn’t harmed interest in bringing him back to England from Govan during the winter window.

It does make sense for all parties for the winger to get out there and secure some regular football before a return to Ibrox at the end of the season.

A move to link up with Lampard’s side for the rest of the campaign will be interesting, especially given Coventry sit 13th in the Championship.

There is potential that with the Gers’ forward in their ranks on a temporary basis, a playoff charge could be on the cards.
