Rangers transfer stalls as crisis negotiations underway to rescue deal

Rangers and Coventry are fighting to revive a deal that sees Rabbi Matondo join the English Championship club, according to Mike McGrath.

Writing via his personal X account on Wednesday (22 January), The Telegraph journalist reported that Matondo’s move to the Championship has stalled due to bonus payments and add-ons.

It is understood that talks are now underway to rescue the deal, which was initially believed to be a loan with the view to a permanent move in the summer.

It seems that the deal isn’t as close to being finalised as initially thought.

However, the Light Blues should still have no problem with offloading Matondo before the end of this transfer window.

According to Mirror journalist Darren Witcoop on 22 January, Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday have also been keen on the former Schalke and Manchester City winger.

Liverpool-born Matondo, who has 12 caps for Wales, has managed to make just eight appearances for Philippe Clement’s side in all competitions this season, so it makes sense to get rid of him and reduce the wage bill at Ibrox.

Matondo has missed a good chunk of the season with a hamstring injury.

However, despite recovering from his setback in December, he’s been scantly used by Clement and it makes sense for everyone involved to strike a deal now.

Hopefully talks can be revived with Coventry but Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday will most likely be there to pounce on the opportunity if it arises.
